VISA INFORMATION

All foreign nationals, except citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, require a visa to enter Bhutan. Tourists must apply in advance through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator, as independent travel is not permitted. The visa process involves submitting necessary documents, including a passport copy, photograph, and travel itinerary, after which the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB) issues a visa clearance letter. This letter must be presented upon arrival to receive the actual visa stamp.

Visa Exemptions for Regional Travelers

Indian nationals can enter Bhutan using either a valid passport or Voter ID card, while Bangladeshi and Maldivian citizens are visa-exempt for the first 14 days but must still obtain an entry permit. However, they are not required to pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) during this period. For longer stays, they must extend their permit and pay the applicable fees.

Visa Application Process

Tourists must book their trip through a registered Bhutanese tour operator, who will handle the visa application. The process typically takes 5-7 working days, and once approved, travelers receive a visa clearance letter via email. This letter must be printed and shown at immigration checkpoints to obtain the visa stamp. The visa fee is $40,while the SDF is an additional $100 per night for most international tourists.

Entry Points and Visa on Arrival

Bhutan does not offer visa-on-arrival for most travelers, except Indian nationals entering by land. The primary international entry point is Paro International Airport, while land crossings from India are available at Phuentsholing, Gelephu, and Samdrup Jongkhar. Indian travelers using land routes can enter with a passport or Voter ID.

Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) and Costs

The SDF is a mandatory daily fee that supports Bhutan’s sustainable tourism and infrastructure. Most foreigners pay $100 per night, while Indian nationals pay reduced rates (₹1,200 per night for adults). The visa fee is separate and non-refundable. All payments must be made in advance through the tour operator before visa approval.

Visa Extensions and Special Cases

Visitors who wish to extend their stay must coordinate with their tour operator, who will apply for an extension with the Department of Immigration. Additional SDF charges apply for extended stays. Special visas, such as business or work visas, require additional documentation and approval from relevant Bhutanese authorities.
