The Jomolhari – Laya Trek is one of Bhutan’s most iconic and challenging treks, offering a unique opportunity to explore the Himalayan landscape, traditional villages, and ancient Buddhist culture. This spectacular trek takes you through high-altitude mountain passes, dense forests, remote valleys, and stunning alpine meadows, offering some of the most breathtaking views of Bhutan’s natural beauty.

Duration:

Typically, the trek lasts around 12-19 days, depending on your pace and the specific itinerary. This includes time for acclimatization and exploring the cultural sites along the way.

Sketched itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Paro (Altitude: 2,280 m)

Your journey begins as you land in the picturesque Paro Valley, surrounded by Himalayan peaks. Explore Paro’s cultural highlights, including Rinpung Dzong and Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples.

Day 2: Paro – Hike to Taktsang Monastery – Shana (22 km, 1-hour drive, Altitude: 2,820 m)

Embark on a breathtaking hike to the legendary Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang), perched on a cliffside. After the trek, drive to Shana, the starting point of the Laya Gasa Trek.

Day 3: Shana – Thang Thangka (22 km, 7-8 hours hike, Altitude: 3,610 m)

Begin your trek through lush forests and along the Pachu River, crossing wooden bridges and enjoying stunning valley views before camping at Thang Thangka.

Day 4: Thang Thangka – Jangothang (19 km, 5-6 hours hike, Altitude: 4,080 m)

Ascend into the highlands with panoramic views of Mount Jomolhari (7,314 m). Arrive at Jangothang, a beautiful campsite surrounded by snow-capped peaks.

Day 5: Jangothang (Acclimatization Day)

Rest and acclimatize to the altitude while exploring the valley, visiting yak herders’ settlements, or taking short hikes for breathtaking mountain views.

Day 6: Jangothang – Lingshi (17 km, 6-7 hours hike, Altitude: 4,000 m)

Cross the Nyile La Pass (4,890 m) for mesmerizing Himalayan vistas before descending to Lingshi, where you’ll see the historic Lingshi Dzong.

Day 7: Lingshi – Chebisa (10 km, 5-6 hours hike, Altitude: 3,880 m)

Trek through scenic landscapes, passing traditional Bhutanese villages before reaching Chebisa, a charming settlement with cascading waterfalls.

Day 8: Chebisa – Shomuthang (17 km, 6-7 hours hike, Altitude: 4,220 m)

Cross the Gombu La Pass (4,410 m) and descend into the rhododendron-filled valley, spotting wildlife like blue sheep along the way.

Day 9: Shomuthang – Robluthang (18 km, 6-7 hours hike, Altitude: 4,160 m)

Hike over the Jhari La Pass (4,750 m), enjoying sweeping mountain views before camping near the Tsharijathang Valley, a grazing ground for takins (Bhutan’s national animal).

Day 10: Robluthang – Lemithang (19 km, 6-7 hours hike, Altitude: 4,140 m)

Cross the Shenche La Pass (4,900 m) and descend into the Lemi Valley, surrounded by towering peaks.

Day 11: Lemithang – Laya (10 km, 4-5 hours hike, Altitude: 3,840 m)

Enter the remote Laya village, home to the Layap people, known for their unique culture and conical bamboo hats. Experience their hospitality and traditions.

Day 12: Laya (Rest & Exploration Day)

Spend the day interacting with the Layap community, visiting their homes, and learning about their semi-nomadic lifestyle.

Day 13: Laya – Koena (19 km, 6-7 hours hike, Altitude: 3,050 m)

Descend through dense forests and cross the Gasa hot springs trail, camping near the Mo Chu River.

Day 14: Koena – Gasa (14 km, 6-7 hours hike, Altitude: 2,638 m)

Trek to Gasa, where you’ll relax in the famous Gasa Hot Springs, a perfect reward after days of hiking.

Day 15: Gasa – Punakha Sightseeing (78 km, 3-hour drive, Altitude: 1,242 m)

Drive to Punakha, visiting the majestic Punakha Dzong and the fertility temple, Chimi Lhakhang.

Day 16: Punakha – Thimphu (76 km, 2.5-hour drive, Altitude: 2,334 m)

Stop at Dochula Pass (3,100 m) for stunning Himalayan views before exploring Thimphu’s landmarks like the Buddha Dordenma Statue and Tashichho Dzong.

Day 17: Thimphu Sightseeing

Discover Bhutan’s capital with visits to the National Memorial ChortenFolk Heritage Museum, and Handicrafts Market.

Day 18: Thimphu – Paro – Departure (54 km, 1-hour drive)

Transfer to Paro Airport for your departure, carrying unforgettable memories of Bhutan’s breathtaking landscapes and rich culture.
