Yaktsa Trek
The Yaktsha Trek is one of Bhutan’s newest and most spectacular high-altitude adventures, taking trekkers through pristine landscapes rarely visited by outsiders. This challenging 7-day trek ventures deep into the remote Yaktsha region, offering:
Untouched Alpine Scenery – Traverse flower-filled meadows, ancient glaciers, and turquoise high-altitude lakes

- Day 3. Shana – Thang Thangka | 22 Km | Hike: 7 – 8 hours | Altitude: 3610 m.

Day 1: Arrival in Paro (2,280m)
Begin your Bhutan adventure with arrival in the picturesque Paro Valley. Visit historic Rinpung Dzong and Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, to immerse yourself in the country’s rich Buddhist culture while acclimatizing to the altitude.
Day 2: Tiger’s Nest Hike & Transfer to Shana
Challenge yourself with a morning hike to the iconic Taktsang Monastery (3,120m), perched dramatically on a cliff face. After descending, drive to Shana (2,820m), the starting point of your Yaktsha Trek, for overnight camping.
Day 3: Shana to Thang Thangka (3,610m)
Begin your trek with a full day’s hike (7-8 hours) through beautiful valley landscapes along the Pachu River. Pass through blue pine and rhododendron forests, with your first views of Himalayan peaks as you approach Thang Thangka campsite.
Day 4: Thang Thangka to Jangothang (4,080m)
Continue ascending (5-6 hours) into higher alpine terrain with spectacular views of Mount Jomolhari (7,314m). Arrive at Jangothang, a stunning campsite surrounded by snow-capped peaks and home to yak herders’ settlements.
Day 5: Jangothang Acclimatization Day
Spend a vital rest day acclimatizing at this high-altitude base. Options include short hikes to nearby viewpoints, visiting yak herder camps, or simply enjoying panoramic mountain views while preparing for the challenging days ahead.
Day 6: Jangothang to Dhumzo (4,890m)
Tackle your first major challenge – a strenuous 7-8 hour hike crossing high mountain passes. Experience dramatic changes in landscape as you enter more remote terrain, camping near the glacial Dhumzo valley with its turquoise lakes.
Day 7: Dhumzo to Thombushong (4,550m)
Continue through pristine wilderness (5-6 hours), passing several high-altitude lakes. The trail offers excellent chances to spot blue sheep and other Himalayan wildlife as you ascend to Thombushong’s spectacular vantage point.
Day 8: Thombushong to Zankepang (4,300m)
Face the trek’s most challenging section (7-8 hours), crossing the Yaktsha Pass (5,050m) for breathtaking 360-degree mountain views. Descend through alpine meadows to Zankepang, your final campsite with a well-earned sense of achievement.
Day 9: Trek Conclusion – Return to Thimphu
After a short 2-hour descent to Drugyal Dzong, bid farewell to the mountains. Drive to Thimphu (1.5 hours) where a hot stone bath and comfortable hotel await to soothe your trek-weary muscles.
Day 10: Thimphu Sightseeing
