Day 1: Arrive Paro – Thimphu Sightseeing (54 km, 1 hour drive, 2,334m)
Your Bhutan adventure begins with a breathtaking descent into Paro Valley, where you’ll be greeted by panoramic Himalayan views. After immigration formalities, embark on a scenic drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s charming capital. The route follows the Paro River, offering glimpses of traditional Bhutanese architecture. In Thimphu, visit the majestic Tashichho Dzong, the seat of Bhutan’s government and monastic body. Continue to the 51-meter tall Buddha Dordenma statue, which offers spectacular valley views. Conclude your day exploring the vibrant Craft Bazaar, where local artisans showcase exquisite handwoven textiles and handicrafts.
Day 2: Thimphu – Punakha Sightseeing – Return to Thimphu (76 km each way, 2.5 hours drive, 1,242m)
Depart early for Punakha via the spectacular Dochula Pass (3,100m), where on clear days you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the eastern Himalayas behind 108 memorial stupas. Descend through changing vegetation into the subtropical Punakha Valley. Visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, strategically built at the confluence of two rivers. After lunch, take a short hike through rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, the famous fertility temple. Return to Thimphu in the evening, stopping at Dochula again for sunset photos if weather permits.
Day 3: Thimphu – Paro Sightseeing (54 km, 1 hour drive, 2,200m)
Begin your day in Thimphu with visits to the National Memorial Chorten and Folk Heritage Museum. Drive back to Paro after lunch, stopping en route at Tamchog Lhakhang, accessible via an ancient iron-chain bridge. In Paro, explore the impressive Rinpung Dzong (Fortress of the Heap of Jewels) and the National Museum housed in an ancient watchtower. Stroll through Paro town’s charming streets and visit a traditional farmhouse for an authentic Bhutanese experience.
Day 4: Paro – Tiger’s Nest Monastery Hike (7 km roundtrip, 4 hours hike, 3,120m)
Embark on Bhutan’s most iconic experience – the hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest). The trail climbs through beautiful pine forests, with stops at a viewpoint café offering perfect photo opportunities of the monastery clinging to the cliffside. Legend says Guru Rinpoche flew here on a tigress’s back. Explore the monastery complex, including the cave where Guru meditated.
