The Samtengang Trek is a gentle and rewarding low-altitude trek located in the heart of western Bhutan. Day 01: Arrival at Paro

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, a representative/Guide from Reliable Tours and Treks will greet you and escort you to your hotel. In the evening, enjoy a leisurely stroll around the charming Paro town.

Day 02: Paro Sightseeing

After breakfast, visit the National Museum (Ta-Dzong), followed by Paro Rinpung Dzong, a massive fortress perched above the Paro River, which houses the district administration and monastic body. After lunch, explore the historic ruins of Drukgyal Dzong, from where Mount Jomolhari (7,314 m) is visible on clear days. End the day with a visit to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, built in 659 A.D. by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo.

Day 03: Paro – Thimphu

Drive downstream along the Paro Chu to its confluence with the Wang Chu, then follow the river upstream to reach Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. After lunch, visit the iconic Memorial Chorten, built in honor of the Third King, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck.

Day 04: Thimphu – Punakha

After an early breakfast, drive over the scenic Dochula Pass, where, on clear days, you’ll witness panoramic views of Himalayan peaks including Gangkhar Puensum (7,541 m), the world’s highest unclimbed mountain. The descent brings you into the warmer, subtropical Punakha Valley, rich with orange, banana, and cactus plants. Visit Punakha Dzong, majestically situated at the confluence of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers.

Day 05: Trek Begins – Khuruthang to Limukha

Drive to Punakha Dzong (1,250 m), the starting point of the trek. The trail gradually climbs through chir pine forests and terraced rice fields.

Day 06: Limukha to Chungsakha

Hike through beautiful rhododendron and oak forests. En route, stop at the famous Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of Drukpa Kunley, Bhutan’s beloved “Divine Madman.”

Day 07: Chungsakha to Samtengang

Continue trekking through scenic villages in the Sha region of Wangdue District.
Trek distance: 13 km | Hiking time: ~5 hours
Overnight at Camp (Samtengang).


Day 08: Samtengang to Wangdue

Descend on the final leg of the trek to Chumzomsa, where your vehicle will be waiting. From here, it’s a short 20-minute drive to Wangdue. Spend the afternoon at leisure or explore Wangdue town or the quaint village of Rinchengang.

Day 09: Wangdue – Thimphu

Drive back to Thimphu. The afternoon is free to explore the capital’s markets, cafés, or handicraft shops. If it’s a weekend, don’t miss the vibrant Weekend Market and Archery Ground.

Day 10: Thimphu – Paro & Hike to Tiger’s Nest

Drive back to Paro and embark on a memorable hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), one of Bhutan’s most sacred sites. Legend holds that Guru Rinpoche flew here on the back of a tigress to meditate. The monastery is perched 900 meters above the Paro valley floor.
Hike duration: 4–5 hours round trip

Day 11: Departure from Paro

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Paro International Airport for your onward journey.
